Black Ink, Made From Color

Black and grays become a deep mix of cyan, magenta and yellow before the page leaves your Mac. Or the reverse, when it is the color cartridge that ran dry.

  1. Drag across the page to compare the original with what will print.
  2. Pick the black that suits your cartridge, from cool to warm.
  3. Darken thin text, or save ink, with a slider each.

A Countdown For Every Cartridge

Inkling reads the levels, remembers them, and works out how fast you are getting through each cartridge.

  1. How many days each cartridge has left at your pace.
  2. An order-by date, so the new one arrives before the old one runs out.
  3. Add what you paid, and every print shows what it cost.

Nozzles That Don't Dry Out

Inkjets clog when they sit unused. One small page of thin strips keeps the ink moving, and uses far less of it than the printer's own cleaning.

  1. One strip per color, thin enough to barely touch the cartridge.
  2. Quick or thorough, with a reminder when the next one is due.
  3. Leave out a cartridge you have removed.

A Wall, From A4 Sheets

Say how wide it should be, and Inkling cuts the picture into labelled sheets that overlap for gluing.

  1. Size it by final width in centimetres, not by guessing a sheet count.
  2. Big halftone dots look sharp from across the room and use far less ink.
  3. Every sheet is labelled, so A3 always goes next to A4.

  1. Thirty to a sheet at the exact size, or two 10 × 15 prints.
  2. Frame each one by hand: top of the head on one line, chin on the other.
  3. Passport, ID and print sizes, European ones first.

Opening It The First Time

  1. 1Open the downloaded file and drag Inkling into Applications.
  2. 2Open Inkling. When macOS says it cannot check the app, choose Done.
  3. 3Go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll down and choose Open Anyway. This happens once.

Inkling is free to use at home or at work under the Inkling license, but it may not be sold, shared or redistributed. Link people to this page instead. It comes as is, without warranty, and can't promise anything about your printer, or about the ink and paper spent finding the right settings.

Photos prints at the exact size, but the authority that issues your passport or ID has its own rules on lighting, background and expression. Check them before printing.

Sign makes a simple electronic signature. It is not a qualified electronic signature under eIDAS, so it won't do for documents that legally need one.

Not affiliated with or endorsed by HP, Avery or Apple. Their names are used only to say what Inkling works with, and are trademarks of their owners.

Inkling is built on open-source software. Every package and its license is listed under About, All licenses, in the app.

What Inkling does with your data is in the privacy policy.

This license is an agreement between you and Olger Chotza, the author, about Inkling, including the app, its files and its documentation (the software). By installing or using the software you accept this license. If you don't accept it, don't install or use the software.

1. What you may do

You may download, install and use the software free of charge, on any number of Macs you own or control, for personal use or for work, including printing for your business.

2. What you may not do

You may not:

a) sell, rent or lease the software, charge for it, or include it in anything you sell;
b) share copies of the software or its download file, or offer it for download anywhere else. Point people to https://ochotzas.com/apps/inkling instead;
c) modify, translate, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer the software, or create works based on it, except where the law allows this despite this restriction;
d) remove or change any copyright, license or trademark notice in the software.

3. Open-source components

The software includes open-source components. Each one is licensed under its own terms, which are listed in the app under About, All licenses. Nothing in this license limits the rights those licenses give you.

4. Ownership

The software is licensed to you, not sold. The author keeps all rights that this license doesn't expressly give you. The name Inkling and its icon belong to the author.

5. Your files

Your documents, photos and other files remain yours. The software processes them on your Mac, and this license gives the author no rights in them.

6. No warranty

The software is provided free of charge and as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. The author doesn't promise that the software is free of errors, that it works with your printer or scanner, or that its results meet any official requirement, such as the rules for passport and ID photos or for qualified electronic signatures. You use the software at your own risk, including the cost of the ink, paper and printing it uses.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the author isn't liable for any damage arising from the use of the software or from being unable to use it, including lost or damaged data, wasted supplies, damage to equipment and loss of profit. Nothing in this license excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as liability for intent or gross negligence, or for death or personal injury.

8. Updates and ending

The author may change, update or stop providing the software at any time. This license ends automatically if you break it, and you must then delete every copy of the software. Sections 4, 6, 7 and 9 continue to apply after it ends.

9. Law

This license is governed by the laws of Greece, and the courts of Greece have jurisdiction over any dispute about it. If you use the software as a consumer, nothing in this license takes away the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, or your right to bring a claim there.
